Samsung's LN52B750 52-inch HDTV sports a 240Hz frame rate, meaning the picture is updated as many as 240 times each second. That's an impressive stat, but is such a quick frame rate really necessary?
That depends on what you want from your HDTV. Let's look at what "frame rate" means, and why you might want 240Hz as opposed to 60 or 120.
A TV show or movie is, of course, just a sequence of individual pictures that change quickly enough to simulate real life. Most of the content you get over the air, through cable or satellite is made of 30 frames per second, also known as "30 Hertz" or "30Hz". So, old-fashioned TV sets that had a 30Hz frame rate did just fine with this content.
Samsung LN52B750 HDTV - What is 240Hz For?But there is more than just 30Hz content out there. Most movies are filmed at 24 frames per second, and so when they are recorded on a DVD, the DVD plays at 24Hz. This is a problem with a 30Hz television, since the video processor has to do some funny math to make 24 fit into 30 evenly. The result is that the picture will skip or stutter whenever fast-moving objects are displayed.
Bumping the frame rate up to 60Hz makes DVDs work a little better, but since 24 doesn't fit evenly into 60 either, you will still see some stuttering motion when watching sports.
By 2007 or 2008, HDTV technology was finally up to the task of generating a 120Hz frame rate. Since 24 does go into 120 evenly, this eliminated the stutter effect on DVDs and all but the fastest action sports. These sets can display 24Hz, 30Hz and 60Hz content with equal ease.
Speeding things up even further to 240Hz may seem like overkill, but HDTV sets like the Samsung LN52B750 use it to make the picture even more real-looking than the 120Hz sets. It does this by actually creating new images (with computer magic, of course) in between the existing frames of the broadcast. Thus, if the TV camera misses a brief image that is necessary to make the action smooth, the LN52B750 can take up the slack.
